Why Am I Not Making Money In My House Cleaning Business? (Part 2)

In Part 1 we discussed one of the reasons you may be leaking profits in your house cleaning business. If you've set your rate and estimated your time correctly, each account should be netting you a profit. But if your employees are spending more time than you estimated cleaning an account, your profits will quickly dwindle.

Another reason house cleaning business owners may feel as if they're not making any money is because they under-priced the account. Many house cleaning business owners walk through a home looking around without really "seeing" the dirt and soil build-up that is there. On the surface, the home looks pretty clean -- especially if it is clutter-free. But clutter-free does not mean dirt-free!

New cleaning business owners often fall into this trap due to inexperience. But veteran business owners can fall into that same trap. Many will say, "I've been doing this for so long I can size up a home quickly and give a price." But if you ask exactly how they determined that price, they don't really have a good answer. Yes, it's true that as you gain more experience you should be able to size up a job fairly accurately, but that's a skill that takes time and if you're losing profits, you need to remedy that situation now!

The underlying reason most house cleaning business owners under-price their services is because they don't have a system for estimating an accurate price. But it becomes much easier and more accurate if you have a system that helps you size up the soil load throughout the home so you can more closely estimate the time it will take to clean.

Debbie Sardone has a system called the Dirt Code, where she rates the soil load based on a scale of 1 to 10. You may want to come up with a different way to measure the soil load -- maybe a point system, where you give points for all the additional cleaning you need to do (detailing faucets, wiping baseboards, etc.). It doesn't matter how you do it, the important thing is that you come up with a system that works for you so you can accurately estimate the time it will take to clean. Once you know that, the rest is easy.
