Improve Cleaning Technician Performance With More Effective Performance Reviews

In a poll of cleaning business owners, we asked how often they did employee performance reviews. A whopping 29% of employers who responded do not do any performance reviews at all. 24% do them quarterly, 15% every 6 months, 25% annually, and 7% other.

You may be taking chances by never doing employee performance reviews. After all, how do you expect your employees to know how they're doing and how to improve? It's also a good opportunity to provide positive feedback, which is important for employee morale. Most employers dread doing them, but when done correctly, you can prevent small problems from becoming big ones.

Here are tips for conducting more effective performance reviews:

  • Studies have shown that short, quarterly reviews improve employee performance more than lengthy yearly reviews.
  • Ask your employees to do a self-evaluation. People tend to admit to their own shortcomings when they have to evaluate themselves.
  • Start the review by giving praise before going through the written evaluation. Talk about the positives such as few absenteeisms or being a hard worker.
  • When discussing areas needing improvement, be very specific. Don't just say, "You're too slow." Instead, give specific examples such as, "I've seen you take too much time to clean because you didn't prepare your supplies ahead of time. As a result, you've spent extra time running back and forth for extra cleaning cloths or mop pads."
  • Make sure you have all the facts and documentation before criticizing performance. Be calm and avoid a confrontational meeting. And be sure to give the employees time to tell their side.
  • End the review by making a very specific list of changes the employee needs to make in order to improve their performance. You'll make it easier for them to improve by being specific.
  • Make it clear that you will be holding the employee accountable for the changes you expect.

Writing employee performance reviews may not sound like much fun, but when done right, improved performance will be your reward.

"Every day, sometimes twice a day, I open your website and I'm always finding detailed information I can use in my business. From your Newsletter, Profit Tips (past and present, I now have a binder full), Forms, Books, Discussions, FREE Webinars, Website building advise and assistance, etc., etc, etc. Becoming a member was the best investment ever.

I have belonged to several organizations and had to travel hundreds of miles to seminars at the cost of several hundred dollars and come away empty-handed with ill prepared instructors, yet here you are with all the information needed at my finger-tips. Thank you, once again Steve and Jean."

"Steve and Jean - thanks a lot for offering this great resource for folks like me who may not yet be in the business but seriously thinking about entering it. Your materials here are truly a Godsend for me. If it were not for your site, I wouldn't know where else to find reliable and honest information about starting and running this type of business.

With all the information I have already gotten from this site, I feel confident that I am better prepared to launch my business and that there are people I could turn to and ask whenever I have questions. For that, I truly thank you both."
