Jean Hanson -

Name Beth Powell
Name of your business: Powell's Nostalgic Cleaning Co.
When did you open your business? May 2015
What services do you offer? The norm. I use only vinegar and infused with essential aromatherapeutic oil, pumice stone on hard stains and baking soda.
Why did you start the business? I have an RN degree but just can't fit in with such hierarchial corporations. I wish I knew about this before, I wouldn't have spent all that money in school! Truly I need to run my own business and call my own shots, and I like to clean. I'm good at it as well.
How many people are in your company? Me only
What has been the biggest surprise, good or bad, since you started? That people will pay me $25/hr in a smaller market.
What is the toughest part of running your business? Getting out there and marketing my business. It's not my strong point.
What is the best part of running your business? I and only I get the credit for my job well done!
Is there anything that you would have done differently? Not yet
What is the most important thing you will be adding, doing, changing in the next year for your business? An employee?
Where do you see your business in 2 years, 5 years, and 10 years? Running a quality business without ever overextending myself by taking on too many customers, just enough for the staff I have.
What advice could you give others and please don't hold back! Just do it
How do you use MyHouseCleaningBiz.com to help you with your business? I don't really know yet, I haven't explored.
School - high school, college, technical school: BA Art History 1987
Paralegal Certificate 1994
RN degree 2009
What are some of your prior jobs or businesses? Worked at a famous museum near Wilmington, DE called Winterthur
Worked at a non-denominational college in Salt Lake City as an assistant librarian
Worked in various Home Care capacities, gave flu shots, and developed many a relationship with my favorite population, the elderly.
Is there a specific person or event in your life that made you decide to go into business for yourself? After being fired, again, a buddy of mine said "we could be siblings, I just can't keep my mouth shut either and have stepped on many a toe. You need to work for yourself. Why don't you become a housecleaner, the pay is good but the best part is that you have a really nice boss." That resonated immediately and I began my new career.
