Name of your business: Meticulously Clean
When did you open your business? January 2011
What services do you offer? We offer move out cleans, post construction clean ups, janitorial office cleaning and post event clean ups for realty management companies, small businesses and individuals.
Why did you start the business? I worked for a local cleaning service for several years but was unhappy with their wage structure.
How many people are in your company? 1
What has been the biggest surprise, good or bad, since you started?
Good surprise: Being appreciated as a solo cleaner.
Bad surprise: Not enough money coming in to do it the way I want. (yeah I know,
old story)
What is the toughest part of running your business? Lack of money and business acumen . Everything else is a piece of cake.
What is the best part of running your business? The cleaning. I love it when I go into a dirty apartment/house and leave it sparkling.
Is there anything you would have done differently? Yes, I would have started my cleaning business BEFORE I had to quit. I'd been being urged to strike out on my own for years, but tried to be loyal.
What is the most important thing you will be adding, doing, changing in the next year for your business? New van. Uniforms. Web site.
Where do you see your business in 2 years, 5 years, and 10 years?
2 years: 2 teams of 3 servicing 12 apartment complexes.
That's it, I'm fine with that number.
10 years: sell it to someone as dedicated to making sure it's meticulously clean
and retire.
What advice could you give others and please don't hold back! If you're going to start a cleaning business, have at least 2 months living expenses as back up. That way as you clean you won't have to 'eat your seed' and can put everything back into the business for the first 2 months at least.
