Name of your business: Magic Assistants
When did you open your business? 2010
What services do you offer? Magic Assistants is a full service concierge company, specializing in cleaning, organizing and de-cluttering services. We offer time saving solutions to clients in need of personal assistance. House Cleaning, Office Cleaning, Detailed Cleaning, Move In/Out Cleaning, Organizational Services by room or entire homes including basements and garages. We also perform Errand Running, Party Planning Assistance from Waitressing, Bar-tending, Set-Up, and Clean Up.
Why did you start the business? I worked in the corporate world for many many years and was promoted quickly within my career; managing 42 stores from New York to Florida. I was married and had 2 children, I knew the meaning and value of time. The company I was employed with was dealing with a declining economy. Many positions were let go; mine was one of them. I realized that in order to help myself and others I needed to offer my go-to-girl experience. I needed to offer something that was valuable. Something that meant something special to everyone; TIME.I truly believe my dedication, customer service skills and extensive list of connections are the heart and soul of all that I do. I am not a franchise company or a pushy sales representative; I wanted to build my company on genuine values of making each and every client feel like family because to me, they are.
How many people are in your company? 12
What has been the biggest surprise, good or bad, since you started? The biggest surprise; getting clients to truly understand their importance to me and the girls I employ. With so many skeptical franchises, gimmicks and infomercials out there it can be challenging to get clients to understand that I'm not pitching them a sales tactic. That my interests are genuine and their input is extremely useful and appreciated. I think the world has become an every man or woman for themselves type of atmosphere because of so many let down's and challenges along their way. I don't find this to be a bad surprise, it was simply put the biggest surprise I've come across when opening my company.
What is the toughest part of running your business? Trying to accept the fact that you truly can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time (I'm truly talking 100% here). The first two years in business every single client smiled with over joy, rated us an A on all that we've done. Then came the hard to please, no matter what you've tried (free services, additional extras, accommodating schedule indifference's) client. It truly impacts your heart and soul; as a business owner you pour every ounce of everything you have into your company. You go above and beyond the call of duty and yet you will come across a client that no matter the thought, sympathy, accommodations, or will power you give you won't be able to attain a 100% satisfaction rating with them. I've always been a firm believer that 99% is not good enough, four and a half stars out of 5 is still not superb. As a business owner that services hundreds of clients a year I now understand that 100% is just a number, it's a figure it does not define you. As long as your efforts have and will always remain 100% the rest is up to acceptance of others.
What is the best part of running your business? My clients, always and forever will be my clients. I change lives, I get to perform a service that transforms their spaces, homes and offices. Just like many of the popular T.V shows, homes can be in complete disarray. Once we de-clutter, organize and deep clean their houses back into homes their faces are absolutely indescribable. It's been years that I've been in business yet tears of joy still overwhelm me when a client cries in satisfaction or is completely speechless because our services changed them. There is no other feeling like it, to know that someone is completely satisfied and it was because of what we do.
Is there anything that you would have done differently?Nothing at all, I believe I have put my best foot forward in all that I have done and continue to do. Slow and steady wins the race, and I am completely satisfied with my outcomes.
What is the most important thing you will be adding, doing, changing in the next year for your business? I will be adding a certified HOME STAGING service to our arsenal of services offered. We have helped many homes prepare for sales by de-cluttering, organizing, deep cleaning and light staging and will soon be offering professional Home Staging services.
Where do you see your business in 2 years, 5 years, and 10 years?I don't necessarily see specifics of where I'll be in the many years to come. I do however plan to continually grow in a slow and steady pace in order to achieve the level of expectations my clients have grown to expect from me.
What advice could you give others and please don't hold back!Dedication, dedication, dedication. Starting a business is hard work you have to prepare to dedicate your time, life and energy. It is not as simple as getting a business name and then saying ok I'm in business. It's takes determination, you have to prepare yourself with the mind set that failure is not an option. Every obstacle, set-back, or hiccup that comes along should be dealt with immediately as learning lessons of what to do going forward or what not to do going forward. A very wise Regional Manager once told me many years ago that "There is nothing that can't be fixed" everything has a solution, your job is to find that solution and enhance it always going forward.
How do you use MyHouseCleaningBiz.com to help you with your business? I just signed on to be a member after periodically arriving to their site several times. When I'm not working I'm researching for the best tools, the newest and latest gadgets, advice from other experts in the field. I believe you can never stop learning and should always try something new or find ways to improve.
School - high school, college, technical school: Emerson High School, Culinary, Penn Foster College for Bachelors of Science in Business, Real Estate Sales Person Course, QC School of Event.
What are some of your prior jobs or businesses? Customer Service Manager, Computer Operator, Executive Assistant, Management.
Is there a specific person or event in your life that made you decide to go into business for yourself? I was always known as the go-to-girl where I previously was employed but it didn't stop there. Friends, family members and friends of friends came to me with every concern, issue or need looking for solutions, guidance or assistance. When the company I worked for downsized and laid off many employees I knew I needed to do something that allowed me to continue with the skills I've gained. I wanted to do something that helped people and allowed me to work closely with individuals.
