Does it feel like you have a revolving door when it comes to employees leaving your company? If it's any consolation, you're not alone. In fact, the cleaning industry is not the only industry with employee turnover issues. Just about every industry you can think of is feeling the pinch.

Here's how to keep employees from leaving

What can you do to keep employees from leaving?

Here are 7 things all home cleaning companies should be doing to reduce employee turnover:

  1. Stop Hiring Warm Bodies. I get it. There are slim-pickins when it comes to finding good employees, but filling a void on your staff with a low performer is just asking for trouble. Think about how this mistake felt in the past when your gut was telling it was a bad hire and you did it anyway. Not only will it add to your stress levels, it will discourage your good workers. They don't want to carry the weight of a poor performer. It's a perfect recipe for driving your best employees to your competition.

  2. Invest More in Training. When you're discouraged with employee turnover it starts to feel as if you're wasting your time training. They're just going to leave soon anyway, so why bother going through the long process of orientation, cleaning training, safety training and customer service training – right? When you have this attitude about training you'll never dig yourself out of the hole you're in. The hidden message you're delivering to your employees is that they're a commodity to you – not worth taking the time to train. If you don't care about the quality of service you provide, why should they?

  3. Recognize and Reward. It's been proven time and time again that appreciation is the number one thing employees want from their job. They may not even realize how important it is to them until they work for an employer that doesn't appreciate them. And for those hard-working conscientious workers that are motivated by a simple “thanks for all your hard work”, you'll suck the energy right out of them by not recognizing their contribution.

  4. Communicate Regularly and Provide Feedback. Some business owners don't think employees care about what's happening in the company – your goals for growth and their potential opportunities to grow with the company. Keeping your employees in the dark about what's happening in your company is keeping you from finding the hidden gems – the people that want to aspire to greater things, and potentially do it with your company. And giving them constructive feedback on their performance keeps them on their toes and gives them performance goals to shoot for.

  5. Encourage Teamwork. Most employees of home cleaning companies start their day at your office. If you're not taking this time to get their day started off in a positive way, you're missing a huge opportunity to encourage teamwork. All it takes is a quick 5-minute meeting to get them pumped up for serving your customers in a positive way. Take a few minutes to do a quick training, share positive feedback from a customer or share company news.  By getting the team together each morning, you're fostering teamwork and creating a “work family”.

  6. Be an Objective Leader. Take the time to study leadership and improve your leadership skills. Good leaders are objective when it comes to employee relationships. Without strong leadership, employees may separate into “cliques”. This is where backstabbing, complaining and friction occurs among the staff. An objective leader that fosters teamwork and doesn't play favorites can make all the difference. Without it, your good workers who aren't interested in work politics will leave for a better work environment.

  7. Reward Employees with Better Pay and Benefits. If your star employees feel they're not getting paid enough for the level of work they're doing, it's an invitation for them to start looking elsewhere. Here is what typically happens in this situation: 1) they stay on the job while resentment builds, 2) they lower their output to a level they feel is justified, or 3) they start looking for another job. When you provide wages and benefits they feel good about, you're making it much easier for them to stay with your company.

I encourage you to read back through each of these 7 recommendations for reducing staff turnover and take an objective look at yourself and how your company operates. Do you see opportunities for improvement? If so, start with just one. Perhaps you never thought about having a quick 5-minute meeting to start the day. It doesn't take a lot of effort to do this. Not only will your employees start looking forward to it every day, YOU will start looking forward to this positive way to start YOUR day! Sometimes just 5 minutes of positivity and teamwork can set the stage for a great day! And isn't that the kind of company you've always wanted to own?
