Mattress Care: An Add-On Service To Provide Your Residential Cleaning Customers
Residential cleaning companies are part of the service industry and should always be looking for ways to differentiate their service from their competition. There are many ways to do this, and one of them is to offer mattress care and maintenance. A good mattress can cost over a thousand dollars, so care is required to protect this investment.
Flipping a mattress. One service you can offer is to flip the mattress. Two to three times a year, you should turn the mattress upside down, so that you promote even wear and tear on the support system. Pillow top mattresses are especially prone to leaving sags and indentations, so if it's a double-sided pillow top, flipping the mattress will help prevent this. This is a two-person job, especially for queen and king sized mattresses. Care is needed so that you do not excessively bend the mattress and damage it or damage the headboard and furniture surrounding the bed.
One interesting side note: the so-called “no flip” mattresses indeed should not be flipped for one important reason. They are essentially half a mattress, meaning that they are not designed to be used on both sides like the traditional mattresses we are used to. The manufacturers save money by making what is essentially half a mattress, then turn around and try to convince you that they have done you a favor. It is indeed easier not to have to flip a mattress, but you end up with a mattress that will last half as long.
Turning a mattress. Similar to flipping a mattress is turning a mattress. In simplest terms, this involves turning the mattress around so that the head of the mattress is now the foot of the mattress. As with flipping, turning a mattress evens out wear patterns, so you avoid sagging and indentations. Doing this four times a year, in addition to flipping, will add years to mattress life.
Use mattress pads. Make sure you educate your clients on the importance of using a quality mattress pad to protect the mattress surface. A mattress pad can be washed, and supplies an added level of comfort for the user. They also help keep sheets in place better than a bare mattress. Also, a stained mattress will often void any warranty, so keeping a mattress in good shape makes a significant difference.
Vacuum a mattress often. Keep the mattress clean with thorough vacuuming. Mattresses are home to dust mites, dust, dander, and other allergens. By thoroughly vacuuming with a HEPA-quality vacuum, you can get rid of these items, which in turn will be helpful to allergy sufferers or those who are prone to respiratory ailments.
Extract a mattress when needed. Lastly, a mattress can be extracted, much like upholstery, to remove stains and the aforementioned substances. Care is needed so as to not to over-wet the mattress by soaking the padding. Also, it is important to thoroughly dry the mattress before using. If possible, use a fan to speed drying.
Learn these important tips and you will be knowledgeable when the topic of mattresses comes up with your client. By educating your customers on how to properly care for a mattress, you will help them save money, have a healthier bedroom, and you will be able to generate extra income in the process!
