Starting a Residential Green Cleaning Program
Last year I attended a seminar by a representative of Green Seal®. He mentioned that they were just getting started with a residential standard for green cleaning. Some of the proposed standards are now available for viewing on their website. Here is some of the information you'll find there. To be certified for residential green cleaning you'll need to have written guidelines that define standard operating procedures. Those guidelines should include:
- Your procedures for storing, handling and use of chemicals.
- You must use environmentally preferable cleaning products, tools and equipment.
- Cleaning procedures.
- Inspection and maintenance program for all tools and equipment.
- Training requirements for your staff.
- Quality control assurance.
- Vulnerable population and accident management.
- Waste and water use policies.
- Safety procedures that are in compliance with OSHA and state regulations.
Tools and equipment that must be used include:
- Microfiber cloths and mops.
- Color-coded systems for cloths, mops and other tools.
- A plan for phasing out equipment that does not meet the new standards.
- Vacuums must capture and collect particulates and operate at a sound level less than 70 dB
- Vacuums must meet the CRI Green Label Program requirements.
The standard also has site-specific cleaning procedure requirements for bathrooms, floors and kitchens. You must also identify whether a vulnerable individual resides in the home being cleaned. If so, you must follow certain guidelines. Accident management must be addressed as well as chemical handling, waste requirements and water use. Training requirements will be an important part of becoming certified for green cleaning. Owners, managers and employees have to receive 8 hours of continuing education on an annual basis. As you can see, "going green" requires much more than just switching chemicals. A lot of careful planning must be implemented, so before jumping in feet first, put together a plan. Not everyone will be able to afford Green Seal's certification, but if you understand the requirements, you'll be able to put together your own plan for providing environmentally friendly cleaning services.
